PLEASE TESTIFY! Action Alert

PLEASE TESTIFY! Action Alert

Shared from Hawaii EV. There are at least 3 bills being heard in the legislature this week, including 2 that we deem are high priority. Please take a moment to submit testimony.  1. PRIORITY BILL - SB2570 SD1 This adds the installation and upgrade of hydrogen refueling stations to the Zero-Emission Vehicle Fueling System Rebate Program. This is being heard by Way and Means on Wednesday, 23FEB @10AM. The deadline for testimony is Tuesday 23FEB @10AM. Position: Oppose - This measure will result in the cannibalization of the Hawaii Energy EV Charger Rebate program and dampen the expansion of public EV charging. Text of SB2570 SD1 Background: Hawaii’s EV adoption is accelerating. We now have over 18,000 EVs in the state, and we’re seeing growing demand for public charging. While many EV owners have the luxury of home charging, many Hawaii residents don’t and will rely on public charging to maintain their EVs. Additionally, residents with home chargers and long commutes will need adequate public charging. The EV charger rebate...

Meet our EV family!

Meet our EV family!

KauaiEV is part of the Hawaii EV Association our state's EV Association. Hawaii EV is a grassroots organization dedicated to helping Hawaii transition to sustainable transportation.   KauaiEV and Big Island EVA started collaborating in April 2019, soon the Hawaii Tesla Club joined, and 2020 the state organization was officially formed. 2021 Maui Nui EV joined us. Each county is represented by at least one Hawaii EV board member. As Hawaii EV we are a coalition of electric vehicle (EV) owners, advocates, and supporters across Hawaii. We teach others the many advantages of EVs, support would-be buyers, and help dealers better sell and service EVs. We also work with local governments and businesses to expand our charging infrastructure. Hawaii EV in turn is  a chapter of the EVA, the Electric Vehicle Association, formerly the Electric Auto Association, an EV advocacy group for over half a century.   The Electric Vehicle Association educates and advocates for the rapid adoption of electric vehicles.     The Electric Vehicle Association (formerly the Electric Auto...

EV 101: Buying and Charging

EV 101: Buying and Charging

View the presentation as pdf Why Drive Electric? well, it’s cheaper, more fun and especially: Good for the Environment! EVs are better for the environment, even when accounting for their manufacturing carbon emissions and when using electricity from coal plants.  40% of greenhouse gas pollution comes from transportation.EVs don’t contribute to air pollution - a key contributor to premature deaths, illness,  and lost workdays.EV components, esp. batteries are highly recyclable .Driving electric reduces our dependency on oil imports.EVs get even cleaner over time, as we generate our electricity with more renewable energy. Did you know that 6 kWhs of electricity are used to refine one gallon of gasoline? I drive 30 miles in my Leaf with 6 kWh. EVs are super efficient - up to 90% of energy stored is used! For the same amount of energy in a gallon of gasoline, an EV can travel up to 180 miles.Average MPGe is around 120.Opportunity to ‘run on sunshine’!Reduced maintenance costs. If you look at the graphic, on the...

2021 EV Legislation

2021 EV Legislation

There were several EV-related bills introduced in the Hawaii legislature for the 2021 session. Hawaii EV is supportive of legislation designed to reduce barriers to the adoption of sustainable transportation and the acceleration of the decarbonization of our transportation sector. We will be providing our members (including members of our various EV clubs) with our position on each of these bills, along with encouragement, information, and tools so that we can offer loud support. In the meantime, we’d like to share the list of bills with you. If you would like to track these bills so that you can receive notifications when they are up for a hearing, as well as learn out to submit testimony, visit Hawaii EV's EV Legislation page for instructions. If you need general ideas for testimony, we list some on this google docHere are the bills: Clean Ground Transportation HB463 - Sets the goal of employing one hundred percent clean ground transportation for the public and private transportation sectors...

Testify!

by Sharon Geiken What I learned from Senator Russell Ruderman 1. Time your letter when a bill is coming up to testify 2. Write your letter as part of an Organization as it carries more weight 3. In the first sentence say who you are (group, as a constituent if applicable and what you want) ie KauaiEV, constituent, please vote yes on bill # Keep it brief. Be polite, this is not the place to vent, we want to change opinions not give way to emotionally relieve ourselves ...

Buying an Electric Vehicle

Buying an Electric Vehicle

This is a collection of tips, in case you want to buy an electric vehicle in Hawaii. Renting an EV to test the experience Before buying, consider renting an EV. Whenever I travel and need a car, I rent an EV or Extended Range EV (BMW i3 or Chevy Volt) on turo.com, which is like AirBnB for cars. This is an excellent way to familiarize yourself with a new car. On several Islands there are also EV rental companies, for example “Mission Zero Hawaii”. Renting one at home will give you additional insight in the public charging situation, and especially now, while there are no tourists youʻll get better deals and help a local business. Check on turo.com for availability at your destination If you are interested in a particular car, it’s good to go to specific EV forums and Facebook groups to read what their owners have to say. Also, every September there are EV Ride&Drives or EV festivals on Oahu, Big Island,...
